LOT Polish B787-9 Diverts to Urumqi with Engine Problem

A LOT Polish Airlines flight enroute to Warsaw from Tokyo diverted to Urumqi, China due to an engine problem on 15 August 2025.

LOT Polish Airlines flight LO80, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, had conducted a departure from Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT).

The flight was to be a scheduled service bound for Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW), Poland.

As the flight passed through Chinese airspace on flight plan track, flight crew experienced a problem with one of the aircraft’s engines.

A descent to a low altitude was initially made, before flight crew elected to make a precautionary diversion. A diversion was conducted to Urumqi Tianshan International Airport (URC), in north-west China.

The flight subsequently landed on runway 26R Urumqi Tianshan International Airport approximately one and half hours after the problem was encountered.

The airline subsequently confirmed that a technical problem with one of the aircraft’s engines prompted the decision to divert.

Flight data shows that flight LO80 had made an on-time departure from Tokyo Narita Airport. Actual time of departure was logged at 11:07 PM local time on 15 August.

Following departure, the flight had set course normally. The aircraft was climbed to flight level FL360 for the long haul service to Warsaw, Poland.

The flight was at cruising altitude in transit through Chinese airspace when the engine issue was reported.

Flight crew initially descended the aircraft in a step descent to FL320, and then FL270, as the flight diverted to Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport.

The aircraft conducting the LO80 service to Warsaw Chopin Airport was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, registered SP-LSA.

This is a 7.5 year old widebody aircraft belonging to the carrier LOT Polish Airlines. It has been in operational service with the airline since its initial delivery from the factory in March 2018.
